Katy Perry found herself suspended on a giant planet above a crowd of fans after her floating platform malfunctioned.

The US pop superstar was left dangling above the audience at Nashville’s Bridgewater Arena moments after wrapping up Thinking Of You.

“This is the first time I've been stuck in space,” she joked.

“I know I'm kind of a space cadet but actually, this thing is stuck. I could be stuck here forever.

“What should I do? Should I tell some jokes, should I tell some stories, should I just sing another song?”

Perry commented on how “beautiful” her fans looked from above, before telling them: “You’d better put your phones up, it’s a YouTube moment.”

The stage hands finally lowered her down but were unable to get her onto the floor, so Perry opted to jump off.

Weighing up her options she said: “I guess I'm just going to have to get down and walk amongst my people. I love this so much. This is what you get for trying to bring out all of space to Nashville. Should I just like, jump?”

She then dived into a sea of hands before being escorted back to the stage by security guards.

It is not the first onstage incident Perry has suffered. At the BRIT Awards earlier this year one of her dancers, who was dressed as a house, fell off the stage during a performance of Chained To The Rhythm.
